Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children Adds New State-of-the-Art Surgical Suites for Patients

The nature themed surgical suites help to provide a kid-friendly environment

ORLANDO, Fla., September 2, 2010 - The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is expanding its facility to better serve pediatric patients in Central Florida. The new expansion includes four new technologically advanced, pediatric operating rooms, 12 private pre- and post- operating rooms, as well as a family lounge and consultation room.

The kid-friendly environment was designed to offer the very latest in pediatric care, with the littlest patients in mind. In fact, the new surgical suites have been designed to incorporate elements of the ocean, jungle, savannah and mountains, which are the four themes from the interactive lobby at the Walt Disney Pavilion, to help enhance the overall patient experience.

The new minimally invasive, fully integrated surgical suites feature large monitors in the operating room to allow the surgeon unprecedented access to information as well as special "green" lighting technology designed to help increase clarity during surgical procedures. Other numerous features have also been added to the new operating rooms to help make this a state-of-the-art facility for pediatric patients.

"We provide our patients with highest quality of care, but we also want them to feel comfortable while in the hospital since this experience can be overwhelming for families," said Dr. W. Raleigh Thompson, medical director of pediatric surgery at Florida Hospital for Children. "Additionally, the new pediatric operating rooms are strategically located directly next to our adult operating rooms, so that our patients have access to all of the technology that Florida Hospital has to offer. Our patients truly have access to the best care available."

Florida Hospital for Children has also added fun murals and artwork throughout the surgical suites to help ease the fear and anxiety of pediatric patients and their families. Additionally, the pre- and post-operating rooms have been outfitted with large flat screen televisions, which are linked to the GetWellNetwork, allowing parents or the child to access the internet, play video games, watch movies, look-up educational material about procedures and much more.
