Florida Hospital Celebration Health Physician, Dr. Arnold Advincula, Elected to Two Internationally Renowned Societies

Dr. Advincula is the only physician in Orlando to become a fellow of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society

CELEBRATION, Fla., May 27, 2010 - Only the top echelon of academic OB/GYN physicians are invited to become members of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society.  Candidates should be a leader in academic obstetrics and gynecology to include national prominence, good character and high ethical standing in addition to a recognized ability as a teacher and clinician to even be considered for fellowship in the society.  At an early age, Dr. Arnold Advincula has earned this top recognition for his work in minimally invasive gynecologic and robotic surgery.

"I am so honored to have my life's work recognized by this group," said Dr. Advincula, medical director of the gynecologic robotic surgery program at Florida Hospital Celebration Health. "For such an established group of physicians and thought-leaders to embrace and recognize the technological advancements I have been pioneering in gynecologic surgery is a real accomplishment."

Additionally, Dr. Advincula was also honored with a board of trustee election to the International Society of Gynecologic Endoscopy.  The society is made up of cutting-edge physicians who perform minimally invasive gynecological procedures and promote the use of these types of surgical techniques around the world.

"Being able to be on this board really puts the advanced surgical work being done at Florida Hospital Celebration Health on a global scale," said Dr. Advincula.

Dr. Advincula's specialty is minimally invasive and robotic gynecological surgery.  A graduate from the Temple University School of Medicine, Dr. Advincula completed both a residency in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  In 1999, he joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in the OB/GYN department where he eventually rose to the rank of clinical professor and director of an internationally recognized minimally invasive surgery program.  In 2001, Dr. Advincula began his pioneering work with robotics and the da VinciĀ® Surgical System.  This cutting edge technology allows surgeons to transfer their skills into an enhanced laparoscopic environment that employs highly precise instruments and magnified vision.

Dr. Advincula's minimally invasive and robotic surgery expertise led him to perform the world's first robotic myomectomy, a procedure that surgically removes uterine fibroids and repairs the uterine muscle.  Benefits of a robotic myomectomy include maintaining a woman's existing fertility, potentially increasing fertility, avoiding a hysterectomy and limiting visible scarring.  A leader in advanced gynecologic surgery, Dr. Advincula continues to develop and practice techniques that address the complex hysterectomy and radical endometriosis surgery so that women can undergo these procedures in a minimally invasive fashion. Most recently, Dr. Advincula returned from South America where he performed Columbia's first gynecologic robotic hysterectomy in Bogota at the XXVII Congreso Nacional de Obstetricia Y Ginecologia.

Dr. Advincula is part of the group of world-renowned robotic surgeons at Florida Hospital's Global Robotics Institute (GRI) where he is co-medical director.  The GRI is a world class, multi-specialty surgical program comprised of leading urologic, gynecologic, colorectal and cardiac physicians dedicated to providing superior patient outcomes through the use of robot-assisted laparoscopic technology.

Dr. Advincula also serves as a professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UCF College of Medicine, director of the AAGL/SRS Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship and is a member of the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement, a branch of the GRI that serves as the premier center for hands-on surgical instruction.
