ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 22, 2009 - Today, Park Maitland School is seeing pink to support a great cause - National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Students were encouraged to leave their uniform khakis and polos in the closet and put on something pink instead. In honor of a beloved 3rd grade teacher who is currently battling stage 4 breast cancer, the school allowed students, faculty and staff to wear pink for the day. The teacher, who has been at Park Maitland for 30 years, shows determination and strength every day, so today the school is showing their support for her and the thousands of others who fight breast cancer each year.
"The students and staff here are like my family - they are my support system," said Chris Armstrong, Park Maitland teacher. "Without them, I wouldn't be able to get through this, and it is such an honor to see what they've done for me today."
Park Maitland sold clip-on pink hair extensions for students to wear to school today to benefit Florida Hospital Cancer Institute. The school has sold more than 500 pieces, raising approximately $5,000. Both girls and boys were allowed to wear pink hair and clothing for the day, creating an unprecedented opportunity since students are usually expected to follow uniform guidelines. The sea of pink at Park Maitland proves the school's commitment to educating students about an important cause.
