Florida Hospital Nurses Hold Drive to Collect Scrubs to Assist Haitian Medical Professionals and Patients

Drive is part of Florida Hospital's continuing commitment to provide relief to Haiti

 

ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 10, 2010 - Florida Hospital cardiology nurses are gathering up their no-longer-needed scrubs to donate to other nurses and medical professionals in Haiti.  Just recently, the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute transitioned to a uniform scrub design for all the nursing personnel, which leaves many nurses with scrubs at home that are not being used.  Those nurses are being encouraged to donate those no-longer-needed scrubs as part of the Haitian relief effort.  In Haiti, medical professionals are working around the clock and do not have easy access to laundry facilities, so these scrubs are a necessity for them to take care of patients.  Some of the patients who don't have clothes are wearing scrubs as well. 

Florida Hospital employees have packed up the scrubs that have been collected already and have put them in a 40-foot-long container with other medical supplies set to be shipped to Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  Florida Hospital is also shipping sleeping bags, surgical supplies, hospital gowns, IV supplies, and personal hygiene items.  This shipment is leaving out of the port of Miami on Friday and will arrive in Haiti in one week. 

Florida Hospital, owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, is working closely with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).  ADRA is also operated by the Seventh-day Adventist church and aids in disaster relief.  In addition, the Seventh-day Adventist church operates the Adventist Hospital of Haiti, a 70-bed health care facility, a school and a church just outside of Port-au-Prince. Already, Florida Hospital has sent thousands of pounds of medical supplies to the hospital and currently has physicians and nurses in Haiti to offer medical care.  Florida Hospital will continue to offer assistance by providing medical personnel and supplies as requested. Through ADRA, Florida Hospital understands the Adventist Hospital of Haiti's very specific needs and is acting accordingly.
