Florida Hospital Welcomes New Surgeon and Residency Faculty Member

 

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 23, 2007 - Surgical Specialists of Florida Hospital, located in the Florida Hospital Orlando Medical Plaza, is pleased to welcome Dr. Alric Simmonds to its medical staff.  Simmonds joins Dr. Joseph Portoghese and Dr. Louis Barr as the group's third surgeon since the general surgery office opened in April 2006. 

In addition, Simmonds will join these colleagues to serve as core faculty members for the General Surgery Residency Program that will begin at Florida Hospital in July 2007.

Simmonds received his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health in 1999.  He completed his surgical residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he received the Department of Surgery Chairmen's Award as Chief Resident of the Year in 2005.

In 2001, the National Institutes of Health granted funding to Simmonds to serve as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Miami and later appointed him as a Health Disparities Scholar.  Simmonds has presented his research nationally at organizations such as the American Heart Association and World Transplant Congress.  He has also published articles in national, peer-reviewed journals.

Simmonds' surgical interests include diseases of the breast, thyroid, and colon.
