ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 15, 2009 - Thirty-two Florida Hospital physicians were honored by Casa de Mexico at the sixth annual Gala of Mexican Independence Concert on Sept. 12 at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center. Physicians from various specialties were recognized for their generosity to underprivileged community members who are unable to afford medical treatment.
"Patients who are referred to me through Casa de Mexico have no way of getting necessary medical treatment," said Dr. Joseph Portoghese, Florida Hospital general surgeon. "It is very rewarding for me to give help to those in need."
Florida Hospital has provided more than $3.5 million in services to patients who have been referred to physicians through Casa de Mexico during the past several years.
"I am extremely grateful to have the support of Florida Hospital and the physicians, who always rush in to help the very sick in their time of need," said Blanquita Trabold, executive director of Casa de Mexico. "Because of generous donations and the help of the physicians, we have been able to help more than 70 patients who found themselves injured or ill and had nowhere else to turn."
Casa de Mexico is a non-profit organization founded to pursue fundraising activities, create relationships with other organizations and dedicate itself to full time to cultural promotion and charitable giving.
