Florida Hospital Announces Expansion of Life-Saving Organ Transplant Services

ORLANDO, Fla., April 13, 2007 - More than 3,000 patients awaiting life-saving organ transplants are Floridians, and many of those residing in the greater Orlando area have had to travel to other parts of the state for liver and kidney/pancreas transplant services - until now.

This week, the Florida Hospital Transplant Center officially announced the expansion of its services to now include liver and kidney/pancreas transplants in addition to kidney transplants.

"Expanding the transplant services is yet another way we are enhancing the patient experience at Florida Hospital," said Tim Jankiewicz, executive director of the Florida Hospital Transplant Center. "The expansion of our services will allow more patients to receive life-saving organ transplants without having to travel to other parts of Florida or even out of the state."

The Center plans to perform its first liver transplant and first kidney/pancreas transplant in May.

Last year, organ donations saved more than 28,000 lives.  Today, nearly 100,000 children and adults are awaiting organ transplants.

The transplant program at Florida Hospital has transformed lives for more than 30 years through personalized care of those awaiting kidney transplantation. Established in 1973, the program offers transplantation services, patient and professional education, and dedication to those in need of life-saving organ transplants.  The Florida Hospital Transplant Center has performed more than 2,000 kidney transplants since 1973.
